Which countries supplied newly mined tin in 2025?

China and Indonesia led estimated mine output. Peru, Brazil and the Democratic Republic of the Congo show that important tin supply also comes from South America and central Africa.

2025 estimate

China and Indonesia were the two largest estimated tin-mining countries in 2025. Peru, Brazil and the Democratic Republic of the Congo formed the next production tier.

The circles compare the published national estimates. Each point marks a representative producing area rather than every operation or legal boundary. The table provides the same facts without the interactive map. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors.

The map measures tin content mined, not refined metal. Concentrate may cross borders before smelting, and recycled tin adds another supply stream.

Mine location and smelter location can differ. Tin concentrate can cross borders before smelting. The country table reports where tin was mined, while an exchange-registered metal brand identifies the refined product and producer.

1 Indonesian tin ore → PT TIMAH smelters → domestic and export markets

PT TIMAH mines on land and offshore around the Indonesian tin islands, smelts metal at Mentok and Kundur, and reports that 95% of its tin products are exported while 5% serve the domestic market.

The 95% export share belongs to PT TIMAH’s products. It is not a claim about every Indonesian miner or smelter. The market markers show broad outlets rather than named customers or live shipments.

tin explained

Tin can be essential even when it is a small share of the product.

Its role often comes from surface protection, joining performance or chemistry rather than structural mass.

Tinplate

A thin tin coating protects a much heavier steel sheet or container.

Solder

Tin is blended with other metals to make a controlled joining alloy.

Chemicals

Tin compounds serve industrial processes that are not priced as metal bars.

Where did tin go in the United States in 2025?

Chemicals were the largest reported US tin use in 2025. Tinplate, alloys and solder followed, showing why a tin benchmark cannot be applied directly to the full weight of a can or circuit assembly.

Tin usually appears as a small part of another product

Tinplate is steel with a protective tin coating. Solder is an alloy formulated for joining. Neither product should be valued by applying a refined-tin price to its full weight.

Chemical applications can consume tin in compound form, while bronze, brass and bearing metals use controlled alloy recipes. Product composition determines contained tin.

Find the tin-bearing fraction

  • For solder, use the stated alloy composition.
  • For tinplate, use the coating specification rather than sheet weight.
  • For bronze or brass, identify the exact grade.
  • Separate refined-metal value from manufacturing and recovery costs.
Calculate tin value by weight

See how concentrated tin mine supply is in the metal supply concentration table, or estimate the weight and cost of a tin sheet, bar or tube with the material cost calculator.

Data methodology →

This chart separates the source observation, its period and its published unit from later currency or weight conversions.

What this price represents

Tin is used in solder and coatings. A relatively small market and concentrated supply can make price movements pronounced.

Monthly observations are nominal USD averages from the World Bank Pink Sheet where available; palladium uses means of stored daily references. Yearly values are means of the available monthly averages, with incomplete periods labelled. Period averages describe the stated interval, not a current executable quote. Currency and weight conversions change the display, not the underlying specification.

What a physical transaction may cost

Grade, delivery location, fabrication, taxes and dealer spreads can change a real offer. Use a matching specification and period when comparing prices.

Common fine-metal weights

Uses the latest reference of the frequency selected above. Values exclude product premiums and fees.

1 gram0.06
10 grams0.55
1 troy ounce1.72
100 grams5.54
1 kilogram55.38

Fine weight versus gross weight

The reference values assume the entire weight is the specified metal. For an alloy, multiply net metal weight by its fineness divided by 1,000 before applying a fine-metal price. Deduct stones or non-metal parts first. A plated item cannot be valued as though all its weight were the surface metal.

A troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams. An ordinary ounce is 28.349523125 grams. A metric tonne is 1,000 kilograms. Use the weight worksheet to compare units or an entire batch.

For a purchase, compare the invoice with the premium calculator. For recovered metal, review deductions in the scrap payout calculator.

Tin content, solder and finished coatings

Tin is used in solder, coatings and other manufactured materials. A tin reference should be applied to the tin content of a product, not automatically to its entire mass. Alloy composition and the costs of processing or fabrication affect the connection between the reference and a physical price.

Solder applications

Electronics and assembly use solder compositions that can include tin with other metals. The product specification determines its actual tin content.

Coatings and chemicals

Tinplate and chemical applications use the metal in different ways. Finished-product pricing includes materials and processing beyond tin itself.

Supply and recovery

Mining, refining and recovered material affect supply. A historical chart describes the reference movement without identifying the cause of each change.

Make comparisons meaningful

Copper and nickel offer related industrial context, while silver can help compare another metal used in electronic applications. These are distinct products with separate units and market conditions.

In the comparison chart, each series starts at 100 on its first shared date. This compares percentage movements rather than equating the price of a tonne with the price of an ounce. For a physical transaction, also match quality, currency and delivery conditions.

Questions about tin prices

Is the Tin price live or a reference?

This page uses World Bank monthly reference averages; a daily series is not available here. The displayed label, source and timestamp identify the observation. Polling a source does not make its underlying publication more frequent.

What can affect the Tin price?

Solder applications: Electronics and assembly use solder compositions that can include tin with other metals. The product specification determines its actual tin content. Coatings and chemicals: Tinplate and chemical applications use the metal in different ways. Finished-product pricing includes materials and processing beyond tin itself.

Which Tin products need separate specifications?

Refined tin: Match the published grade and mass basis. Solder alloy: Use the stated tin fraction and account for other alloying metals. These product differences mean one headline reference cannot price every physical transaction.

What do monthly and yearly Tin prices mean?

Monthly values retain the World Bank source averages rather than being rebuilt from a different daily feed. Yearly values average those monthly observations. The table flags incomplete coverage. A period average is different from a closing price.

How do I value a custom amount of Tin?

Use the tin value calculator for weight, fineness and currency, then inspect its scenario chart and weight table. A contained-metal estimate excludes unentered premiums, fees and non-metal components.

Where does tin come from?

China and Indonesia were the two largest estimated tin-mining countries in 2025. Peru, Brazil and the Democratic Republic of the Congo formed the next production tier. See the tin production map and table.

How does tin move from mines to users?

PT TIMAH mines on land and offshore around the Indonesian tin islands, smelts metal at Mentok and Kundur, and reports that 95% of its tin products are exported while 5% serve the domestic market. Follow the documented tin routes; they are explanatory relationships rather than live cargo tracking.

What is tin used for?

Chemicals were the largest reported US tin use in 2025. Tinplate, alloys and solder followed, showing why a tin benchmark cannot be applied directly to the full weight of a can or circuit assembly. The end-use section separates the cited applications.
