What is palladium used for?

Automotive emission-control catalysts are palladium’s main application. Electronics, chemical catalysts, dental and medical products, jewellery and investment form smaller, specification-sensitive markets.

Applications are shown without made-up percentages. USGS names vehicle catalysts as the leading domestic PGM use but does not publish a palladium-only percentage split across every application. The page therefore shows functions rather than invented shares.

Emission-control catalysts

Named use

Palladium is widely used in gasoline-vehicle catalytic converters.

Electronics

Named use

Capacitors, integrated circuits and other electronic components use palladium.

Chemical and petroleum catalysts

Named use

Catalytic processes use palladium for select reactions.

Dental, medical and jewellery

Named use

Specialised alloys and fabricated products use smaller volumes.

The catalyst market connects new metal and recycled metal

Palladium helps convert harmful exhaust gases in gasoline-vehicle catalysts. The metal remains inside the component until the catalyst is replaced or the vehicle is scrapped.

Specialist processors sample and recover metal from spent catalysts. The recoverable value depends on measured PGM content, not the converter’s total weight or appearance.

Questions for a palladium comparison

  • Is the reference for refined palladium and the same observation period?
  • Does the product contain palladium alone or a mixture of platinum-group metals?
  • Is a scrap estimate based on assay and recovery terms?
  • Are fabrication, financing and delivery costs stated separately?

palladium explained

Palladium has a mine-to-catalyst-to-recycling cycle.

New palladium and recovered autocatalyst metal meet in the refining system. The cycle explains why mine output and total available supply should never be treated as the same number.

  1. 1

    Co-mined

Nickel-copper or PGM ore carries palladium with several other metals.

  2. 2

    Refined

Multi-stage processing separates palladium to a saleable specification.

  3. 3

    Used

Catalyst makers incorporate small, controlled loadings into components.

  4. 4

    Recovered

Spent catalysts are sampled, processed and returned as secondary feed.

Where is palladium mined?

Palladium mine supply is led by two distinct ore systems: Russia’s nickel-copper deposits around Norilsk and southern Africa’s platinum-group deposits.

2025 estimate

Russia and South Africa supplied most estimated palladium mine output in 2025. Canada, Zimbabwe and the United States formed a much smaller second group of producers.

Palladium is usually mined with other metals. Country totals measure contained palladium and do not show recycled autocatalyst supply.

Mine supply excludes recovered catalysts. The country estimates measure newly mined palladium content. Used vehicle catalysts are an important secondary feed but belong to recycling statistics, not mine production.

Behind the chart.

Data methodology →

This chart separates the source observation, its period and its published unit from later currency or weight conversions.

What this price represents

Palladium is a platinum-group metal used in catalysts and electronics. Daily reference snapshots are available here; monthly averages are derived from the stored daily series.

price-chart.com stores timestamped hourly spot references separately from its daily USD-per-troy-ounce reference observations. Hourly points are indicative market references, not executable dealer quotes or exchange closes. Monthly observations are nominal USD averages from the World Bank Pink Sheet where available; palladium uses means of stored daily references. Yearly values are means of the available monthly averages, with incomplete periods labelled. Period averages describe the stated interval, not a current executable quote. Currency and weight conversions change the display, not the underlying specification.

What a physical transaction may cost

Grade, delivery location, fabrication, taxes and dealer spreads can change a real offer. Use a matching specification and period when comparing prices.

Palladium by weight.

Common fine-metal weights

Uses the latest reference of the frequency selected above. Values exclude product premiums and fees.

10 grams415.07
1 troy ounce1,291.00
100 grams4,150.66
1 kilogram41,506.61

Fine weight versus gross weight

The reference values assume the entire weight is the specified metal. For an alloy, multiply net metal weight by its fineness divided by 1,000 before applying a fine-metal price. Deduct stones or non-metal parts first. A plated item cannot be valued as though all its weight were the surface metal.

A troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams. An ordinary ounce is 28.349523125 grams. A metric tonne is 1,000 kilograms. Use the weight worksheet to compare units or an entire batch.

For a purchase, compare the invoice with the premium calculator. For recovered metal, review deductions in the scrap payout calculator.

Read palladium with its own source and coverage

Palladium is a separate precious-metal market. This site uses daily reference snapshots for palladium and derives monthly means from the available daily history. It does not substitute platinum prices or silently splice another benchmark into the series. Coverage is shorter than the long-running World Bank histories available for several other metals.

Catalyst applications

Palladium is used in catalysts and electronics. Changes in manufacturing specifications can alter the material needed for a product, so end-use context matters.

Supply and recycling

Recovered components can contribute material, but recovery depends on composition and processing. The gross weight of a component is not its palladium weight.

Relative platinum-group prices

Platinum provides a useful comparison. Keep the series dates and frequency aligned, and treat possible substitution as an application-specific question.

Make comparisons meaningful

Use the platinum comparison to inspect relative movements. Gold and silver offer additional precious-metal context without implying that their supply or demand is the same.

In the comparison chart, each series starts at 100 on its first shared date. This compares percentage movements rather than equating the price of a tonne with the price of an ounce. For a physical transaction, also match quality, currency and delivery conditions.

Which product are you comparing?

Palladium product specifications to compare

Questions about palladium prices

Is the Palladium price live or a reference?

The daily series is a price-chart.com reference observation, separate from an exchange closing price or executable intraday quote. The displayed label, source and timestamp identify the observation. Polling a source does not make its underlying publication more frequent.

What can affect the Palladium price?

Catalyst applications: Palladium is used in catalysts and electronics. Changes in manufacturing specifications can alter the material needed for a product, so end-use context matters. Supply and recycling: Recovered components can contribute material, but recovery depends on composition and processing. The gross weight of a component is not its palladium weight.

Which Palladium products need separate specifications?

Fine palladium: Use a palladium-specific reference and stated fine weight. Alloys: Apply verified palladium fineness rather than assuming the whole item is precious metal. These product differences mean one headline reference cannot price every physical transaction.

What do monthly and yearly Palladium prices mean?

Monthly palladium values are means of the daily snapshots stored for each month. Missing days leave a partial period. Yearly values average those monthly observations. The table flags incomplete coverage. A period average is different from a closing price.

How do I value a custom amount of Palladium?

Use the palladium value calculator for weight, fineness and currency, then inspect its scenario chart and weight table. A contained-metal estimate excludes unentered premiums, fees and non-metal components.

Where does palladium come from?

Russia and South Africa supplied most estimated palladium mine output in 2025. Canada, Zimbabwe and the United States formed a much smaller second group of producers. See the palladium production map and table.

How does palladium move from mines to users?

Nornickel mines polymetallic ores around Norilsk, produces refined palladium through its integrated processing chain and supplies a worldwide customer network. Automotive catalysts remain the central end market. Follow the documented palladium routes; they are explanatory relationships rather than live cargo tracking.

What is palladium used for?

Automotive emission-control catalysts are palladium’s main application. Electronics, chemical catalysts, dental and medical products, jewellery and investment form smaller, specification-sensitive markets. The end-use section separates the cited applications.
