Where can metal supply be concentrated?

Choose a metal and explain what its leading producer shares can—and cannot—tell you.

Start here

The idea in plain language.

Producer shares show whether mine or smelter output is spread across many countries or led by only a few. Import reliance adds a different clue: how much of US use depends on material from abroad.

  1. World output Begin with a sourced production total for one period.
  2. Producer shares Divide each country’s output by the world total.
  3. Add context Check imports, refining, recycling, inventories and substitutes.

Try it with your own choices.

Change an input and build a short explanation you can read, check and share.

This uses sourced 2025 estimate production estimates and US import-reliance figures where USGS publishes one.

Building the explanation

The source, date and limitation will stay beside the answer.

What the answer means—and what it does not.

These checks stop a useful shortcut from turning into a misleading claim.

What does top-three share mean?

It is the combined share of world output from the three largest countries listed in the source.

Is import reliance the same as risk?

No. It shows dependence on foreign supply, but allies, inventories, recycling and substitutes can change the practical risk.

Why does the year matter?

Mines open, close and change output. Treat the producer shares as a dated snapshot, not a permanent ranking.

Worked example

How to read a concentration result

A top-three share of 75% means three countries produced about three out of every four units in the measured world total. It does not mean supply will be interrupted.

Illustrative arithmetic. It is not a current quote, forecast or transaction offer.
